Some sheets are as thin as a sheet of paper, while others are thick enough to withstand sanding and finishing.

Veneers date as far back as ancient Egypt. In fact, they were used on the tomb of King Tut. In the west, they really took off during the renaissance, and by the 18th century they had become an art form. Unfortunately, during World World II, a lack of quality materials lead to many poor quality veneer furniture being produced. This is likely when veneers acquired their bad reputation.

Veneers offer many advantages over solid wood. For example, solid wood bows and can warp over time. Veneers are less susceptible to humidity.
