Which HAZWOPER Training Course Should You Take?

OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, or HAZWOPER, is a set of safety guidelines for employees who deal with hazardous waste while working. If you’ve been asked to take a HAZWOPER training course for your job, you may be wondering which type of class you need to take. Here’s how to determine which course is right for your needs.

HAZWOPER training is available in the form of eight-hour, 24-hour, and 40-hour classes. How long of a course you need to take depends on what kind of work you do.

The 40-hour HAZWOPER course is for employees whose duties expose them directly to hazardous waste. The 24-hour course is for employees visiting an uncontrolled hazardous waste operation. the eight-hour course is a refresher course for employees who are involved with hazardous waste. If you’re unsure which if these courses you need to take, ask your employer for clarification.

While your job determines how many hours of HAZWOPER training you need, it’s up to you how you take your HAZWOPER course. Some individuals may prefer to complete their training in person, while others may prefer to take the course online. Either option will provide you with the training that you need to do your job safely.
